Monday, May 10th — Deal’s Gap RESORT, Supermoto Day, Breakfast & Ride
MONDAY, May 10th —- at 9:00am. Supermoto Breakfast & Gap run.Lets meet for breakfast at the Gas Station @ 9:00am….. and ride the Gap afterwards
It has recently come to my attention that there are going to be multiple groups at the Gap during the 1st and 2nd week of May. Within these groups — there are many supermoto’s. This is an attempt to rally up all these various groups for one massive get-together.
- Homeland Sportbikes ——– 4 KTM 625’s
- WMRiders, Grand Rapids, MI —— 2 CRF’s, 1 SXV
- Whatever SMJ members we can rally up, there are many already planning on these datesIf you are a local —- maybe after an hour or so of good Gap runs — someone would be willing to guide a sumo ONLY tour of some other roads?
Post up!

Los Angeles Area Ride 1/3
Mikedbike and I have been riding Little T & Bouquet Canyon the last few weeknds. Great roads with very little traffic. We wanted to know if anyone would like to join in with us this Sunday. I know that most are going to Adams on Sat, but you may want to join us for Sunday. We will meet up, get gas and ride to a place to eat. Gas up there and your home. I can only get about 80 miles to my tank and I can make it to the restaurant (Crazy Ottos in Leona Valley) on one tank. Your looking at about 160-170 miles of great roads. It’s a blast. If you don’t go, your going to miss out on a great ride.
When: Jan 3rd
Time: 9:00 AM
Where: Meet at the Mobil station off the 210 freeway and Lake St. in Pasadena.CLICK HERE for map of meeting location.

the last ride of 2009
only 30% chance of snow today so I decided to take the bike out for a ride.
it’s been crappy for over a month and I’ve been getting the urge to ride more an more.
plenty of snow in Tahoe
fortunately the road was rideable

well not this one but the highwayPlacerville area

I always try to get on some new road, this one was a SM heaven!

CA193 – fun as always

trying to decide which way to take

nope, too steep

lovin’ it!

and back home, just in time to spend the last 50miles in rain and snow. but it was worth it.
sorry for the crappy pics but I didn’t want to take my camera because of wettness -

Wow! 1st ride on mom’s 250x
2 days ago we went out and got my mom a bone stock 2009 wr250x for her to learn on. We just couldnt pass up a mint 09 for 3900! Well today was the first day since then that it hasnt been raining so it was time for a test drive!
Well first things first. Why the hell arnt the rims 3.25 and 4.25? When riding I got to the edges of the tires so quick it was disappointing. A 120 tire in the front and 150 in the rear would have been the ticket. But as its still better than any sport bike Ive ever ridden :nutkick: Also its a pretty low sumo. Pegs where scraping all over the place. Which dont get my wrong, is tons of fun but the bikes barely leaning over! Pegs sliders are a definite must. Over all it was an awesome ride. It shifts soooo smooth, the FI is awesome and theres almost no vibration. The black is ugly IMO but I know must people think other wise. I think white would look sooo much better.
Well the bike is my moms, so I only rode it for about 20 minutes then I had to let her ride it. Im buying it off her when shes ready for a new bike:thumbup:
Heres some pictures.

Got my first real ‘tard ride today
I got to ride a box stock DRZ400SM home. I’m a short guy, (5′8", 30" inseam) but the seat height wasn’t a problem at all. The narrowness really helps. The power was underwhelming to say the least, but definitely adequate. Getting around traffic was no problem. I actually got less air on it than on my Buell, as it accelerated much slower towards my favorite railroad crossings than I am used to. That was definitely disappointing. I’ll have to use more runway next time. It is as fun as I expected. Getting the thing around feels effortless. It definitely cemented a couple of things:
1) I’d want a bigger bike, physically. Even though people say DRZ’s are heavy, it feels like a scooter compared to anything I’m used to. Cruising on an uneven, stripped pavement surface also had it wandering around a lot more than I’m used to. No lightweight 450’s for me. The whole bike felt more narrow than I’d like.
2)More power. I’d definitely want a big-bore single…I like torque.
I’ve rode a lot of bikes lately as my Buell is slowly being repaired. The only other tardish bikes I’ve rode are a couple Hypermotards. While they are a riot there are no illusions of that being a dirt bike. I jumped one and the landing had me sore for days. Riding a real motard is definitely an experience you need to feel to appreciate.

I’ve pm’d with a couple folks from the area, and we need to get a ride planned!! Haven’t thought really of where, or when, but lets get some names together and your locations and we can go from there.I’m located in Santa Rosa Beach, and would be willing to ride anywhere between PC beach to Ft Walton, and I-10 to 30A.

ride height question
question….i’m just trying to get in on the SM pie, just bought a cheap XR650L (non-running, a project). i’ve been exclusively a street/sport rider w/ ZERO dirt experience. i’m used to sport bikes that i can stradle and either plant both feet or at least tip-toe. looking at the XR, even w/ the seat cushion OFF, there is no way in hell i can even get close to getting my feet down, and even if i lean it down to get 1 foot down, i’m pictuing the bike being leaned waaay down. i’m not tall, only 5-8 on a good day, i tried and i can’t really even swing my leg over the frame as it sits. as it sits, the handle bars are almost at my shoulders when i’m pushing it around. should this be of any concern or is this how it’s supposed to be? i don’t figure it’s too big of a deal and just the way dirt/SM riding is (except for a longer fall to the ground).can anyone post any pictures of u standing next to the bike? list your height/inseam and maybe the seat and bar height from the ground? at worst maybe i’ll look into having it lowered? thanks for the help

first late nite ride.
So last night i was board after a long day of boring engineering classes. So i decided to go out on a little ride. I usually just go mess around in the football parking lot but i decided to go for more, i took a gamble on a couple 3 tiered 8 step stair sections. After a failed fist attempt i got it down, after that all the stairs, ledges, sidewalks, retaining walls, etc.. on our university campus makes it like a big expensive skate park, with parked cars to dodge.Well thats just a little ramble, i had a blast and can wait to get back to twin cities over winter and go on some sweet city rides..

Few pics from today’s ride
I posted the ride on a local forum but nobody else showed up. High 43F might have something to do with it.
It was a beautiful day though
first time on this road, this section wasn’t as tight so I could actually catch more than 1 turn in the picture

a couple of wineries there

some vines still had grapes on them

it’s probably gonna be some sweet wine out of them

Impromptu Turkey Ride in WNC
It’s not like we need an excuse to get some guys together for a group ride but I got one anyway. Both Tdogmason and J Banning are gonna be nearby for the Thanksgiving Holiday and want to do a little sightseeing. I’m starting to put together a nice little loop southwest of my location where traffic should be light and the temps warm. Friday and Saturday are both options but we’re waiting to see which day might have the better weather. Stay tuned for details. -

First Ride
I got a 2006 DRZ400SM. Full Yosh, FCR, 3×3 and bunch of body. But first ride was epic. First and everystop light got and small and continually growing stoppies. They are so easy on a sumo. And every take off got a little whoolie. Not the longest but they are coming along. This thing is gonna get me in trouble. Every dirt road side road animal trail I could see on the side of the road got explored on the way to town. Once in town was passing cars on the sidewalk and hopping off cus it is so fun. Havent hit any stairs yet but they are coming. Definately going to be a hoolie in no time.
Went down once and gonna have a hell of a bruise where I landed on my keys in my pocket. But I was trying to make it thru a mud patch I was cutting thru racing a friend to a restraunt. Kinda hard to mudd on street tires but so much fun!!! After that I got stopped on the beach. I was bombing down jumping wash out on the water edge and picking up a few whoolies on the smaller ones. Evidently a snowbird called the cops and he clocked me doing 76 running down the beach. He ended up being more interested in the bike and gave me a verbal warning. Got stopped again in Rockport for doing a little stoppie at a light. Used some pointers I heard on my street/track site about not being illegal as i was in control and butt in the seat and think the small town cop was just confused and let me go with another warning.
Cliff Notes. New bike. First ride…Dropped once in the mud…stopped twice no tickets….Awesome Hoolie bike….. Very Happy!!!!
Few question on more mods. I was thinking about dropping one tooth on the front to get a little more bottom end and pull up power. Topped it out at 104mph today. No need to go that fast as most of the roads I ride have a 60mph speed limit back roads. I would like to have more whoolie power and top speed about 80. Also any 1/2 1/4 throttle turn mods or kits. My only complaint with the bike is my wrist doesnt bend far enough to get the throttle WFO. Other than that I am in love with this thing!!!

First real ride on the XR
Well here she is:
Went for a 300 mile ride with a couple other guys, one on an R1 and the other a 1000rr.
Go figure the XR doesn’t do so great on the highway but once we got to the twisty stuff I was really suprised just how well it did! (so you have context I’ve ridden my F3 and 600rr at a few track days and was at the upper level of intermediate, I also race little mini bikes and do okay. Basically I’m not great but I can get around pretty quickly)The bike has a few modifications, 320mm front rotor, Rad cush hub, Maxxis slicks, 12kg spring in rear, 4.9s in the front, 7.5 weight fork oil. Motor is uncorked but thats it.
Hopefully I’ll be able to put up the videos when my buddy uploads them.
Anyways, the bike was suprisingly stable when leaded over and had plenty of drive out of the corners compared to keep up with the liter bikes. Any open stretch though they decimated me. The guy who kinda stayed with me, I would classify as a slow-mid pack intermediate tracy day rider. The suspension damping was a bit harsh on the high speed hits (although the sportbike guys were complaining how the road was utter crap so maybe the XR’s suspension was doing okay).I was a bit concerned getting the stiffest springs I could find, may be too stiff. They are not, stil a lot of travel and give a much better feel than my old XR that had the stock springs. I’m 180 before gearing up.
The slicks did slide a little in the first couple minutes if I got on it too hard when leaned over, they came up to temp very quickly though (60 degree day).

took the Ktm 300 Ring dinger for a street ride on knobbys
Hey guys, I finally sacked up and took the old 300 out with the sumo’s while on my dirt set up. I kinda did this because i wanted to see what kind of road manners it will have when sumo’d. I definatly learned a lot. One, its going to need a new seat. Its literally a 2×4. My drz’s seat dominated this thing. Its going to need suspension work. It dives in way to fast for me to be comfortable and the rear is way too stiff. Fuel milage wise i got high 30’s which isnt bad for a 2 stroke with dirt gearing trying to keep up with a sumo and a 750.I felt like i was wringing its neck at like 65. I have a feeling im going to gear it pretty low for a sumo, the big 2 stroke hit is so awesome. On the way home i hit 80 something. Plus side is i can power wheelie with a little preload in 5th:bannana: Riding on knobbies on the road was a blast. Kinda like riding in the rain, you never know if its going to hold. Any way, it will be sumo’d this winter so i’ll give you updates:thumbup: Bottom line 55 2 stroke hp, 230lb’s. this thing is going to rip.:arsenal ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY TWO STROKE! -

**N. Georgia Group Ride PLANNING***
He guys, LordMDP and I have been riding around the past couple weekends and have seen some lone supermoto out by themselves. It’s usually just use 3 riding, and we’d love to organize a group ride in the next month or so. Our routes usually vary, but consist of the local loop and the other main roads, all the ForestService routes(mostly legal:hmmm:) and then even the ORV trails here in Dahlonega if isn’t super wet out. Looking to get everyone’s input on dates, times, route suggestions, meeting spots, etc. I’ll be inviting some other dualsport guys as well, so it doesn’t really matter what you ride. Lets do it. -

GMR is open. I rode it on Sat. It was a little dirty, but no big deal. We can start in Azusa and connect to GMR. We can do that there and then back.
Anyone want to play??When: Sat 10/17
Time: 9:00AM
Where: Azusa Ave North of 210 freeway. Meet at gas station. (Mobil station I believe. I will check and make sure.)Only one problem. I don’t know if we will get rain and if that will cause any problems on the road. We can see how it goes this week I guess.

rear ride height adjustability
Hi,
Exploring what’s out there with suspension setup.. Looks like MX guys don’t care for rear ride height since none of the stock shocks are height-adjustable nor there’s any way to shim the shock mount. Is there any simple solutions for that other than playing with preload? I found a gizmo that allows for height adjustment that slots into the shock mount but they’re asking almost $300, at this price point it’s probably better to just get Ohlins with length-adjustable collar. Not that I’m fast enough for this to matter for my lap times much but I’d like to better understand what different settings do for bike handling and from my road racing experience swingarm angle and rear ride height was one of the most important things to tweak.
Thanks!
