  • Official list of KTM Tested/Approved Tires…

So I am hunting around for a recommendation for a new set of tires for my 690 SMC. I really like the Supercorsa Pros that it came with, but they are now discontinued. So I am thinking about getting the BT016 or the Contiforce SMs. I did however come across the official tested and approved tire guide which I thought was kinda cool. Here is the statement and i linked the document with the lists of tires.

"In your interest: Tire tests are a fixed component of KTM vehicle development. With the knowledge that tire design has a powerful influence on handling, the KTM development department has been busy with intensive tire tests for years. Motorcycle tires are a fixed component of the overall vehicle concept. KTM tests possible tire mixtures for duration and performance under different conditions
(rain, heat, race track, handling) for optimal compatibility with the vehicle. Only the tires that stand the extensive test procedure with regards to high speed stability, steering accuracy, handling, wet and dry grip and wear, receive a recommendation from the KTM vehicle engineers – and with it a "green light" for daily motorcycle life."

    http://www.ktm.com/fileadmin/systemd…06-2009_06.pdf

I was surprised that the BT016 and the Contiforce SMs were not on the List for the 690SMC but were for the 690SM… Any thoughts or a tire recommendation? Haha

  • Need help with acerbis dhh headlight on ktm

Hey there, i’ve got a 2006 ktm 625smc and ordered an acerbish dhh headlight in orange for it. Went to put it on and surprise the straps that came with it are way too small for the forks on my bike. Does anyone know of a larger strap that might fit or any suggestions? Any suggestions would be awesome. Once I put it on i’ll take some pics.

  • KTM Suspension starting point

Just put the wheels on a 08 450 xcr-w. Already have stiffer rear spring. Current suspension is set-up for east coast enduro riding. Just wanted some ball-park settings for 70% street and 30% hard pack dirt roads. Right now it feels pretty comfortable on city streets. Doubt I’ll ever do track.

  • KTM 690SMC vs. KTM 690 Enduro

    Hey guys,

I’ve got a bit of a dilemma that I hope you can help me out with.

I’m in the market for a new KTM since the 660smc I had was stolen.

I do quite a bit of enduro riding during the fall and winter (street riding is close to impossible in Sweden during the winter) and during the summer I stay on the streets and also do some track days.

I had an enduro kit for the 660 and when it was stolen the enduro kit was mounted. So I still have the SM kit in the garage.

From what I understand the only differnces between the 690SMC and 690Enduro are the wheels (obviously :) ), suspension and brakes.

Will a 690Enduro with SM wheels hold up for street and track riding?
Can the suspension on the Enduro be stiffened enough without replacing springs and oil etc. ?

Will I suffer more from riding a SMC in the forest or riding an Enduro on the street/track?

Am I better off selling the SM kit and buying a Endurokit for a SMC?

  • OT: What KTM dirt bike to match my 690SMC?

I’m 5 days from getting home from deployment to see my new-to-me 690SMC.

I’m also searching for a dirt bike to ride at the "Kahuku" the big motocross complex on Oahu. There’s a main track- which I’ll avoid, several smaller practice tracks, and miles of steep, gnarly, slippery trails through the woods. Lots of clay/mud, roots, pine needles and rocks on the trails. The tracks are pretty open with decent jumps. I’m looking for a do-it-all KTM for a rusty off-road rider.

It’s been 7 years since I had a ‘00 WR400 which was too heavy and I never did use all the power. I had a ‘88 YZ250 before that that was awesome, but not a trail machine- worked great in the Cali desert though.

So…. what bike to get? I’m leaning towards the 250XC-F model. There’s also the 250XCW 2 stroke. If I get a 4 stroke, I can plate in Hawaii- not that I will, but it’s nice to have the option.

I’m not going to put many hours on the bike, so maintenance won’t be much of an issue. Probably riding a couple days per month with my schedule.

Any suggestions from the moto crowd?

  • Red Baron Triple Clamps/ KTM 450 SMR

KTM 450 SMR’s come with 18-20 mm adjustable offset triple clamps…
18 – 20 is great when you have a 21 " front wheel but not very good with a 17 " front wheel…I bought my bike from a friend who put 14 mm’s on from a 2001 SX 125..they worked great but I felt I needed the extra 2mm to add a bit more stabilty, specially on high speed sweeping corners…I also run my forks down into the clamps sometimes depending on the track and the red barons are beefy enough to get away with that….plus the factory ones are cheesy lookin…
If you have the stock clamps now and want to step up I strongly recomend the Red Barons…the quality is very good as well the offset is amost perfect for most riders….
When you buy after market triples they rarely come with the fork tube/steering head tube or bearings so you will re use what came with your bike…unless your bearings are trashed which is unlikely…
I won’t go into the complete tear down as most manuals/part manuals are quite clear, but I will say that If you want 18 mm offset with your old triples or 12 mm offset with your new triples then the small dot on the top of the steering head tube should be on your side (KTM thing)…..its an eccentric (sp ?) shaped tube so depending on what direction the dot is in it will effect how much offset you will effectively be putting into your bike….I have a pict in my docs I will post after this….Since I know how well the bike handles with 14 mm offset I tried some high speed runs down the back roads near home….:headscrat hard to tell w/o finding a twisty road so I will report back when I hit the track next week…..I love the look of the triples as well the very strong contruction and design….I highly recomend them to anyone who wants to improve the handling of their bike and wants a high quality well priced set of triples….
So, at the beginning of this I mentioned the 21 inch front tire deal, w/o getting into a very long dragged out conversation I will keep this to the reaon why some go with the lessor offset….
These bikes we ride are dirt bikes, the geometry was designed by some very smart people who factored in the design with a 21 inch front wheel in mind….having said that when we stick 17 inch front wheels on these bikes we effectively reduce the trail a great deal…when we reduce the trail we also reduce the stability of the motorcyle…. when we add triples with smaller offsets we are increasing the trail again close to what the engineers had originally intended…
The offset of the triple clamp is the distance between the center of the fork leg and the center of the steering fork tube/stem… the greater the distance between them the less trail and less stabilty, vise versa…TO A POINT..there is a "happy medium" and it is possible to go the too far in either direction…
If you continued an imaginary line from the center of the steering tube at the same angle caried through to the ground and create another line vertically downpast the axel to the ground that distance between the two on the ground is called the trail…..Not to be confused with rake, rake as you will see in the pict is the angle of the forks in relation to the road…
I’m not suggesting everyone go buy a set of triple clamps, but what I am suggesting that If your bike is sprung for your weight and the suspension IE sags are spot on and you want more out of the handling of your bike then this would be a very very good way to go…
    Well I hope that helps….
the last pict is of the old triple clamps…

Well, after a year of badgering a KTM tuner in Germany, trying to decipher German and going back-and-forth I FINALLY got my venturi intake.

Here are some pics, I’ll give you all a seat-of-the pants and dyno review in a few days.

  • KTM 530 EXC revalve question

Ok let me start with a little history. I raced Supermoto on a 06 YZ450 that I had originally raced expert offroad. The suspension was originally setup for Baja type terrain by Enzo. When I switched to Supermoto it seemed perfect after I stiffened up a bit. Never any complaints.

I have a new 09 530exc, that I have removed all the crap parts and setup bare bones for the track and street. Somehow KTM manages to have the fork too soft and too harsh. It dives a lot, but is harsh.

I might occasionally take off road. I personally think I should ask a revlave service to setup expert offroad with the suspension shortened a bit for better supermoto and then adjust firmer when racing or rider SM.

    1. Thoughts?
    2. Who is a good KTM service for revalving?

    Thanks

  • KTM 690SMC vs Husky SM630

If money were no object, which one would you choose?
Looking at both. Nearest Husqvarna dealer is 200 miles from
home. KTM is 5 miles but can’t seem to find a 2010 model.
I don’t mind the drive to Memphis if that’s the best choice.
Does anyone have either of these bikes now. Likes and
dislikes. Anyone dealt with Fletcher’s Cycles in Memphis. Seems
like a great guy and very knowledgable over the phone.
My only other option is the SM510 but the small tank might
be a problem. I have a 50 mile round trip to work every day.
Is the mileage reasonable to assume the 510 will get 25+/- MPG
in stop & go and 60mph on the 4 lane.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • Finally found the inverse Black/Orange KTM graphics – 625 SMC

    Just figured it out……

Remember — I’ve had a couple posts looking for this graphic?

Been looking for the 2005 KTM 640 Supermoto BLACK, inverse graphics. Well — every dealer has been telling me they can’t get them. Even a couple UK dealers have e-mailed be back saying they can’t get them…..

    I figured out the problem.

The 660 SMC and the 625 SMC had shroud decals (the stick-on type)…..so, most dealers look under the parts-book for decals. When they look under the 640 Supermoto Black — the KTM parts-book doesn’t list an item number. So, everyone simply says — sorry can’t get it.

IF YOU DIG A LITTLE DEEPER…..and LOOK AT THE SHROUDS under the body parts section….. they are listed at 2x’s the price….. and say — SPOILER BLACK/ORANGE.

The reason the decal is not available….. is because it COMES ON THE SHROUD.

  • KTM 450 EXCR 5″ rear wheel clearance question

OK, mounted a 5" rear wheel laced to talon hub on my 2008 450 EXCR with a 160/60 Conti SM tire. No way will it clear the chain. I have do run 5mm difference on the chain blocks to get enough clearance so that the rear wheel will roll. To the point where the sprocket touches the chain guide. I have read others have installed this wheel so what gives?

I sent the wheel back to Motostrano an they are very helpful. They measured the offset and found it to be correct and are willing to exchange the wheel for a 4.25" but obviously I will need a new tire.

I really wanted to run the 160/60 tire for the nice profile. Opinions?

  • SB26’s GP85 KTM Build.

Ok guys, now that i finished up the DESmini project its time to get down to business!

Most have already seen what im working with but just incase you haven’t, here is what im starting with. Its a 2005 KTM 85SX. It came with a few extra bits (Breaking waves front and rear, Billet KTM gas cap, and V3 reeds).

I have ordered a LOT of parts to finish this build and to be ready to race. Ill post the parts as they come in to keep the suspense.:D

It was an extravaganza finding fork and shock springs for the 85 SX. I ended up taking to the very nice people at Cannon Race Craft. Bonny REALLY took care of me in getting the right* springs for my bike. Took some research but was great that they had odd ball springs in-stock* for my bike. They ARE the go to for springs. The new rear (orange) spring is installed on the shock. Im going to take my forks, springs, shock to my good friend Todd at TTR to fine tune and set up my suspension.

Here is my 2.15" X 12" Front and 2.5" X 12" Rear Cyclone wheels. Crazy story, i ended up knowing the owner of Cyclone (locally) though a friend… small world.

Next i was on the hunt for 12" spoke kit. The obvious is Buchanans for spokes. But i wanted some trick nipples . So i found out that RAD MFG sells billet aluminum nipples that fit Buchanan spokes. Buchanan spokes for the KTM 85SX are about $200 front and rear! I dont know why people dont buy from RAD MFG but they have the deal! They sell and STOCK KTM 85 12" spoke kits for $140! They come with the trickiest spoke wrench ever too! The spokes are off to the powder coaters.

Lastly for today i got my KTM 450 bar clamps. They bolt right on to the 85 to run fat bars. I have some REALLY cool bars coming my way :arsenal.

I have my frame, swing-arm, sub-frame, triple set, foot pegs, spokes, hubs, side covers, bar clamp, and a few other bits at ShadRack Power Coating.

A shameless plug— Shad is the BEST and CHEAPEST powder coater in Central Florida. When i mean best he truly is. I have had A LOT of parts powder coated all over FL, Shad had the best turn around (about 1-2 days), he clears the parts, throughly blasts the parts, great deals and stocks tons of powder. He dose a lot of innovative multi colors as well. If you need ANYTHING powder coated contact him at http://shadrackpowdercoat.com/ .

More very soon…. some good stuff :)

  • took the Ktm 300 Ring dinger for a street ride on knobbys

Hey guys, I finally sacked up and took the old 300 out with the sumo’s while on my dirt set up. I kinda did this because i wanted to see what kind of road manners it will have when sumo’d. I definatly learned a lot. One, its going to need a new seat. Its literally a 2×4. My drz’s seat dominated this thing. Its going to need suspension work. It dives in way to fast for me to be comfortable and the rear is way too stiff. Fuel milage wise i got high 30’s which isnt bad for a 2 stroke with dirt gearing trying to keep up with a sumo and a 750.I felt like i was wringing its neck at like 65. I have a feeling im going to gear it pretty low for a sumo, the big 2 stroke hit is so awesome. On the way home i hit 80 something. Plus side is i can power wheelie with a little preload in 5th:bannana: Riding on knobbies on the road was a blast. Kinda like riding in the rain, you never know if its going to hold. Any way, it will be sumo’d this winter so i’ll give you updates:thumbup: Bottom line 55 2 stroke hp, 230lb’s. this thing is going to rip.:arsenal ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY TWO STROKE!

Have a "new to me" 2005 KTM SMR 450 (mildly built).

Gearing is 14 / 47. In the ballpark for a road course? Jennings GP in Florida…Not the SM course, the road course. Tall enough?

Also, has Dunlop slicks…Tire pressure starting points? It should be high 50’s in the morning and mid 70’s during the day. I weigh about 180 lbs.

  • KTM 690 SMC vs Husqvarna SM610

I’ve narrowed down my choice for my first Sumo (first bike actually) to the KTM 690 SMC or the Husqvarna SM610. I have a dealer close enough for bouth of them. I already know most of the ‘facts’ but I’ll need your input to pull me over to one of these two bikes.

I will be using this as a daily commuter during spring and summer, but it won’t be my only way of transport. I won’t be competiting in any type of racing and I won’t be doing any kind of hardcore off-roading.

Which is most reliable and requires least maintenance?
Is the slipperclutch on the KTM really a proper slipperclutch like you would expect from an aftermarket one?
Is there any difference between the quality of parts between the two?
Is there any noticeable difference between the Marzocchi 45mm and the WD 48mm forks?
Is the KTM really that much more powerfull as it looks on paper (64bhp vs 53bhp)?
Which is more fun to ride? More easy to stunt, wheelie, stoppie, .. ?
Which is better in normal (not highway) traffic?
Which is easier to handle? (novice rider!)
Which is easier/better to ride calmly (power in low rpm)?
Which would be the better commuter?
Which would be the better competition bike (between these two!)?
What are the ‘must’ upgrades for these two? The SM610 will probably need some handguards and maybe an aftermarket exhaust? How about the KTM?

    Which would you choose?

Thanks for your opinions! They are all very much appreaciated and will definatly help me make the final choice (and hopefully not regretting it).

  • KTM SMR 450 Gearing / Tire Pressure Q’s

    Hello,

New to this bike and have been away from SM for a couple of years…

Have a "new to me" 2005 KTM SMR 450 (mildly built).

Gearing is 14 / 47. In the ballpark for a road course? Jennings GP in Florida…Not the SM course, the road course. Tall enough?

Also, has Dunlop slicks…Tire pressure starting points? It should be high 50’s in the morning and mid 70’s during the day. I weigh about 180 lbs.

    THANKS in advance!!

  • Feeler — Gutted KTM 625 cans For Sale

Thinking about pulling the trigger on a full exhaust system….am wondering if anyone would be interested in buying my OEM gutted cans.

The bike is an ‘06 625 SMC……. has 3,000 miles and is show-room new…… the cans were gutted by the previous owner —- he did an excellent job and it looks factory…… the cans are also in perfect condition….. Not a mark on them….

I want to upgrade to get a little more power (from the Akro header)….. and to have sound controllable inserts — ride to work, quiet baffle…..track day — no baffle.

My bike has the JD jet kit, gutted cans, w/ the air box lid removed….. did a dyno run yesterday and it did 57 hp….. (BTW — his dyno ALWAYS reads high) The nice thing though was —- had another guy with the same ‘06 KTM that did the runs back to back (I wasn’t even going to do any dyno runs….until he had his sitting there…couldn’t resist to see the difference)….. he had the NON-drilled stockers on…. my bike produced an even 3-4 hp ACROSS the entire RPM range. Its a well worth addition……(assuming you have the JD jet kit and it is jetted right)

I’ll take more Pics……. heres one that I had on my desktop…..

Please PM me if you have any interest. (BTW —- I’m not going to give them away….. I’m looking for a reasonable price, maybe $250? — PM me if I’m full of it, or if I get a couple offers….I may take the highest offer….and if I get all low-balls, I’ll keep them)
