New to the site & need DRZ advice!
Good afternoon! My name is Beck, I am new to this site and am the proud owner of an 06 DRZ400SM (her name is Rita) that I bought about 10 months ago. I have a previous history with sport bikes (have had a few 600RR’s) and just recently transitioned over to the motard world.I ride mostly on the track (Jennings, PBIR, and Homestead) as I live in the S. FL area. I also have an 08′ CRF150R Big Wheel that I’m in the process of converting into a mini-moto for some of the karting tracks around here.
Anyway, being new to the Supermoto world, I would appreciate any advice or recommendations y’all have about mods for both the DRZ and the CRF. The only mods on the DRZ are a full yoshi pipe, flat side carb, and aesthetic improvements. Being that I ride the DRZ at regular track days that are generally filled with sport bikes, I’d like to do what I can to get the most out of my ride. A little more top end would be nice (especially for those dang straight-aways) but I know I’ll be sacrificing a bit for this.
As I’ve said, any mod recommendations are welcomed (and explanations would help too!). I am very very uneducated when it comes to motards so have a lot to learn still.
Thanks guys!

New To DRZ’s with ?’s
Ok so i am about to buy a DRZ400sm and i am not sure if i am going to go new or used yet.If i go new i have about $2000.00 in parts that i want:
Yoshimura RS-2 Full Exhaust $440.00 Shipped (Ebay)
or
FMF Power Bomb Header $200.00 (Ebay)
FMF Power Core Slip on $255.00 (Ebay)
Twin Air Power Flow Kit $229.95 (Motostrano)
Keihin FCR MX 39MM Carb. $691.00 (Motostrano)
Jet Kit $60.00
Acerbis Dual Road Handguards $125.96 (Motostrano)

MOTOLED DRZ400 Edge-2 Tail Light (Red) $61.70 (Motostrano)
Kellerman Micro 1000 Turn Signal $35.10 Each x2 (Motostrano)OR Go used and hopefully something will already be on the bike like exhaust and what nots but if i go used i will then want to refresh the top end so probly a 434cc big bore kit with hot cams and better valves.
my issue is with the big bore kit what carb would be better in the long run the 39mm or 41mm and how reliable is the bike with the big bore kit.
also is their any other mods that i might want to look into.
:headscrat
:hmmm:im just not sure if i should drop 5800-6500 on a new one than another 2000 for stuff i want or just go used and spend like 3000-4000 and probly another 2000-2500 on parts.
Thanks

Going back to a DRZ
After leaving supermoto a couple of years back I’m shooting for a comeback later this year.I used to have a DRZ400SM, with full exhaust, 3×3 and what not. I didn’t have any suspension work, aftermarket brakes or a carb.
A KTM 625’s been on the menu, but mulling it over I’ve also thought about getting another DRZ. I liked the DRZ because it was simplistic and reliable (even though the rings blew at 15k).
I’ve never ridden a KTM 625, but I hear it’s an appreciably better bike. I like that the KTM 625 has both kick and electric start – not that I’d use the kick start often, but it’s a nice thing to have.
I like working on bikes. I like doing little modifications and deciding between this or that to make a bike your own. It seems that you don’t do much to the KTM, it’s just something you buy and ride. I liked my DRZ because there was some back story to it aside from bringing it home.
I’m not sure what everyone else’s thoughts are, but I’d like to hear them. I realize that the DRZ will never stack up to the KTM, even after dumping a ridiculous amount of money in to it… but none the less would you consider it an option?
Thanks

What Bars came stock on the 06 DRZ?
I was wondering what bars came stock on the 06 DRZ? As most of you know, I just bought an 06 Saturday and was looking at bars for them and noticed Motostrano sold Tag X5 bars and those are the bars that my bike has on them now. So did I also win some new bars when I bought the bike? or are those the stockers? Thanks,

DRZ 400SM Suspension setting for my fat @$$
I have rapidly come to find out that setting the suspension correctly on the DRZ is WAY more difficult than on my sportbikes. I can’t seem to find the right balance for my weight. I am still using the stock suspension and will upgrade when time/cash allows.I am approximately 225 lbs and ride knee down most of the time (again, due to my sportbike trackday/racing roots).
Can anyone please tell me what settings you’re using based upon similar weight and riding style so I can use your settings as a baseline for my tweaks? HELP!!!!! :hmmm:
My sincerest thanks!!!!!

Differences between DRZ
Are there any differences between the DRZ125 and the 400sm? I’m thinking mainly in terms of the wheels and spacing and things like that. i’ve got a DR125sm, which many parts from the DRZ125 will fit, and I want to get some new rims and a few other parts. Will DRZ-400 wheels fit the DRZ125?Also, as far as chains go, can I buy any chain I want to put on my bike? I’m converting the bike to red and black, and want to accent the bike with more red parts.

I hate the drz dipstick
I mean why can’t they just have a sight glass? its so much easier and simpler. I hate this stupid run it for a few minutes then let it sit for a few minutes then check it crap.ok, rant over.. ride safe everybody
Also just curious.. Say the oil is barely touching the bottom of the dip stick, not that i let it get that low but, how much oil does it take to get it to the top?? ive always wondered that… whenever i check mine and its low i just put a quick chug in and all is well..

MRD/SSW DRZ pipe
Finally got a chance to take the DRZ out to the track with the new pipe today. I was very pleasantly surprised. My highly sensitive, finely tuned and semi-annually calibrated B.U.T.T. dyno says I gained roughly 3.1415 horsepower. I’m sure that figure is related to the fact that the pipe is round. Pretty significant when you start out under 30 hp.
The biggest gain though, and maybe Eddie while chime in to tell me I’m full of it, but the bike seems to pull much harder and better all the way up the revs. I wasn’t even sure the DRZ had a rev limiter, as it always quit pulling and you had to shift way before any Sears-like rpms were reached. But today, I bounced off the rev limiter a time or two because the bike pulled all the way up there. For bolt-on performance, this thing is pretty impressive. I may just have to break down and admit that maybe Eddie knows a thing or two about DRZs after all.
Thanks for sponsoring the sportsman class SSW!

Popping & farting DRZ
Yo! Finally got a chance to take out my ‘01 DRZ 400 for a little trail ride the other day and it started up ok and seemed to run fine but on any decel or off-throttle it would back fire bad. It had been sitting for a couple months. Any ideas? Thanks! -
DRZ rear rebound damping pressure
Hey, anyone know’s what the stock pressure?
Anyone tweaked this? Lowering the pressure makes it rebound slower right? -
Stubby can on a DRZ
Hey guys. I was going to buy a mrd ssw pipe for my drz however money is tight. And I can’t be arse selling my scorpion slip-on. So I thought I cut it down to approx 12-15 inches. However before I go cutting my expensive ti exhaust, would like some opinions from those who have cut their pipe down. Mainly want to know the recommended jet kit dynojet?JD?? Also any power gain?? Plus noise I mean I like a loud bike but is it too loud for street use?? Any advice please. -

Las Vegas to Rio on DRZ
Thought you guys might be interested in my upcoming ride! Myself and my best buddy Matt are riding our ‘06 and ‘08 DRZ 400SM’s from Las Vegas through Central/S America to Rio de Janeiro in time for Carnival. …if we’re still alive. Matt just started riding a couple months ago and I like to go really fast all the time. :hmmm:We’re outfitting the bikes for the adventure touring, but we’re keeping the 17’s on with Distanzias.
The whole trip is going to be documented in HD, and there’s going to be a finished film next Summer.
Right now we’ve got just about all of the gear and we’ll be building the bikes in a few days. Check out the website for more info:

New To Sm And Need Drz Advice
Hi,I ended up here during a search for info on DRZ sm’s. I sold my cruiser this spring and am looking to replace it with something I willl enjoy as much as I do Motorcross. I want to hit track days and of course a ton of urban assault. My initial focus was on a KTM 530 EXC with a set of SM wheels and tires. After a ton of reading I have decided to start with the DRZ due to cost and SM in-experience. From what i’ve read the DRZ is a great place to start. I am looking at two very different bikes.
The first is an 06 with 4600 km on it and the following mods. Apparently the engine amd suspension only have 100kms
-Athena 440 Big Bore Kit
-Yoshimura Power-up Kit (Cams and CDI)
-38mm FCR Carb (KX Style)
-Ported Head
-Boysen Quick Shot
-Full Yoshimura RS-3 Exhaust
-Racetech Front and Suspension (Gold Valve 2’s and springs)
-Renthal Fatbars
-Zeta Folding Levers
-Galfer Steel Braided Frone Brake Lines
-Cycra Supermoto Handguards
-Zeta Billet Chain Guard and Sproket Guard
-One touch fork Bleeders
-Custom XGX Graphics
-Brand new Pilot Power TiresThe second is a 2008 with 100kms on it totally stock. The kicker they both have the same asking price.
In the past when buying motorcross bikes I have looked for something well tuned, Exhaust, jetting and suspension done, well maintained and short on experience. Being a 2 Stroke nut for the last 15 years I feel a little out of my element here.
-Is there any thing I need to find out about the modded bike
-Should I have a dealer look at the modded bike before purchase
-Looking at the mods on it is there anything else I will need to do to make it totally reliable with the existing work "ie valves, valve springs crank, crank coating etc".I am of course leaning toward the moded bike as I prefer riding to building.
Thanks for your help. I really want to put one of these in my garage this weekend.
Zach :coffee:

yet another “new guy with a DRZ” thread
Looks like the whole first page is something along the lines of "Just picked up a DRZ blah blah blah…" but there were a couple mentions of a WRX and I thought I’d try to knock them back a page.
Anyway, picked up an ‘07 DRZ400SM after riding a friends DRZ. About 10 minutes later I was hooked, and after a bunch of online hunting found a good example with some good mods: Two Brothers pipe, Power Bomb header, Contiforce SM tires, Keihin Carb, and some other little things like ProGrips, a license plate relocation bracket, pegs, shifter lever… I’m probably forgetting something. Anyway, you can see I wasted no time in exploring some local woods. SM spec tires aren’t the greatest in the mud, but so what!

HID Slim Kit 6000K H4-3 Install for Suzuki DRZ
Here is the link to the kit I purchased off Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HID-S…Q5fAccessoriesYou can pick different color options, but all the kits are the same other than bulb color. This kit comes from Hong Kong and takes about a week and a half to arrive. The total price with shipping was $54
I wanted to start off by saying that this kit far exceeded my expectations for a knock off ebay purchase. The kit comes in two small boxes and has everything you need to wire up your bike without having to cut, add or modify in any manner. The kit does not come with instructions so what I wanted to do was post up a how to thread with step by step instructions on the install. This may be elementary for some folks, but on the other hand, many people like to see pictures and instructions before they even purchase an item.
Tools you will need:
Phillips Screw Driver
8mm and 10mm socket
Electrical Tape
Zip TiesContents of the Kit
1. Remove the Headlight Mask, three Phillips Screws, two on the sides and one in the front at the bottom of the Mask.
2. Remove 4 10mm Bolts holding the Headlight. Remove Headlight and disconnect Three Pin Bulb Connector and Black Relay Box attached to the Headlight.
3. Remove stock bulb and boot from the Headlight Unit. This is done by pulling the retaining pin down and then out of the carrier. Once you have the stock bulb out you can replace with the new HID bulb. One hint is to remove the bulb from the HID carrier by pushing down and twisting, the bulb itself with remove and then you can install the carrier without messing up the bulb.
There will be three tabs that fit down into the headlight Unit, once you get those to seat correctly you can replace the retaining pin. Then slid the HID bulb into the Carrier and push and twist.
4. Next step will be to strip your bike down. Remove seat, Battery Cover Plastic and Radiator Shrouds (bottom bolt on both sides). Remove two 10mm bolts on the bottom of the Gas Tank. This will free the Gas tank so you can move it up just enough off of the rubber stoppers to feed the power wire down the backbone of the bike.
5. Feed the power wire with the fuse attachment down the backbone under the tank, but above the rubber stoppers for the tank. Snake the wire across the top of the air box and then attach Red Wire to the Positive of the Battery. You can then zip tie for a clean look. You can also replace the Gas tank and button up the back end of the bike.
You can fold back the relay box from the power wire, and mount in the wire harness on the bike for a clean and effect application.
6. The remainder of the connections will now be feed through the triple tree area into the headlight cluster. The only plug connector that will go into the stock wiring harness will be the Three Pin Connector. This will replace the stock bulb connector.
The ground from the HID kit will fit on the bolt underneath the speedo mount directly in the back of the wire cluster.
What you have left is the three connectors that attach to the Ballast of the HID kit.
7. Install the Headlight into the mounting bracket, with the four 10mm bolts from earlier. Once you have the headlight back in, you can connect the three leftover plugs to the ballast. You can then twist and wrap all of this cluster together and zip tie to the top of the headlight. I used a few zip ties here and one big one around the whole mess to tighten down to the headlight, but it worked very well and is hidden from view when the Headlight Mask is installed.
8. Replace Headlight Mask with three Phillips Screws and you are finished. The light takes a few seconds to warm up and the Ballast makes a small buzzing noise, but everything seems to work and it does make a big difference in light out-put and it also looks killer. :arsenal

Thinkin of a drz sm…..
I currently ride a 02 r1 and im going to move to a supermoto soon. The drz seems to be a good ride once hopped up. Those of you that own them….regret not getting something else?I just want to do a few track days when i can and mostly be a backroad, fireroad, sidewalk hooligan. I want something reliable and easy to work on and get parts for and fun to mod. And used prices are reallly good.
My last dualsport was a xr650l with a few mods, so how will it compare power wise. I know the handleing is going to be WAY better.

DRZ SM fork wraps
I’ve been thinking of changing the look of my drz. I would like to do something about the gold forks. I would like to have black fork covers but the problem is I can only find LightSpeed Carbon Fiber ones. I would like to buy some however LightSpeed apparently not supplying the UK at the moment so ordering from America looks the only opinion. However, is there any other alternatives on the market? If so, need info. and where can I purchase them from?Cheers

GSXR Wheels on a DRZ?
Is there a way to mount GSXR Wheels to a DRZ?
I’m on a budget and $300 for GSXR wheels is a lot less than 1000+ for warp 9’s or even more for excels.
Are there any hoops that lace to stock hubs?
I could manage that. -

Whats a DRZ SM worth?

‘03 DRZ400s w/ 2800 miles & motostrano sumo setup

Slow as hell compared to my z1000 but crazy fun… definitly needs to be uncorked some more.
Only issue at the moment (aside from the crappy weather the last few days
) is a stumble in the midrange. Previous owner installed a K&N and supposedly rejetted, I dont have a clue whats in there so this winter I will probally start fresh with new kit and do the 3×3 and exhaust while i am in there. -
RM to DRZ fork swap rake questions
I have a set of 01′ rm250 forks that I want to put on my DRZ. I have two choices for triple clamps, either 24.5mm offset or 22.5mm offset. I believe that the stock drz offset is somewhere around 21mm. Will the 24.5mm clamps quicken the steering too much or will they be ok for street speeds? Any other comments on the swap would be appreciated also. thanks. -
clark 3.9 tank for the DRZ 400 sm
bought a new/used set of blue and white plastics for my drz 400sm. The setup came with a clark 3.9 gallon plastic tank. When fitting it on tonight, i noticed that it completely covers the choke knob on my FCR 39, rendering it useless!!! Has anyone else attempted to fit this tank, and is there some trick that i am missing? -
Diesel in my DRZ. Yes, I’m an idiot
So long story short I’m an idiot and managed to get diesel in my DRZ. I’ll blame part of it on being in another country and thier gas stations working differently. So far I’ve:
-removed the fuel tank and drained the diesel
-rinsed the tank and fuel valve with gas and drained it twice
-set the tank out to dry and let the rest inside evaporate, it’s been 2 hoursIs there anything else I need to do before putting it all back together? I’m planning on it running a little crappy for a bit until the carb’s running all gas again.

DRZ Tyre Life
Hi AllI’m wondering what the average tyre life is for the 208’s?
I have done 2500 miles, and needed a new tyre at 1500 (the canvas started stripping in the middle)
now is it because I’m fat…or should I expect more. I figured the extra weight would increase wear?
I use the bike maybe 2 days a week to commute (dual carriage way) and then go out for a blast at weekends (b-roads mainly)
