  • New to the site & need DRZ advice!

Good afternoon! My name is Beck, I am new to this site and am the proud owner of an 06 DRZ400SM (her name is Rita) that I bought about 10 months ago. I have a previous history with sport bikes (have had a few 600RR’s) and just recently transitioned over to the motard world.

I ride mostly on the track (Jennings, PBIR, and Homestead) as I live in the S. FL area. I also have an 08′ CRF150R Big Wheel that I’m in the process of converting into a mini-moto for some of the karting tracks around here.

Anyway, being new to the Supermoto world, I would appreciate any advice or recommendations y’all have about mods for both the DRZ and the CRF. The only mods on the DRZ are a full yoshi pipe, flat side carb, and aesthetic improvements. Being that I ride the DRZ at regular track days that are generally filled with sport bikes, I’d like to do what I can to get the most out of my ride. A little more top end would be nice (especially for those dang straight-aways) but I know I’ll be sacrificing a bit for this.

As I’ve said, any mod recommendations are welcomed (and explanations would help too!). I am very very uneducated when it comes to motards so have a lot to learn still.

    Thanks guys!
    Beck

  • Monday, May 10th — Deal’s Gap RESORT, Supermoto Day, Breakfast & Ride

MONDAY, May 10th —- at 9:00am. Supermoto Breakfast & Gap run.

Lets meet for breakfast at the Gas Station @ 9:00am….. and ride the Gap afterwards

It has recently come to my attention that there are going to be multiple groups at the Gap during the 1st and 2nd week of May. Within these groups — there are many supermoto’s. This is an attempt to rally up all these various groups for one massive get-together.

    - Homeland Sportbikes ——– 4 KTM 625’s
    - WMRiders, Grand Rapids, MI —— 2 CRF’s, 1 SXV
    - Whatever SMJ members we can rally up, there are many already planning on these dates

If you are a local —- maybe after an hour or so of good Gap runs — someone would be willing to guide a sumo ONLY tour of some other roads?

    Post up!

  • Popping & farting DRZ

Yo! Finally got a chance to take out my ‘01 DRZ 400 for a little trail ride the other day and it started up ok and seemed to run fine but on any decel or off-throttle it would back fire bad. It had been sitting for a couple months. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • …. History of the KTM SMC & Duke

Had a few local people ask about my KTM 625 SMC….. and while I was currently doing some of my own research on the bike — ended up starting a post listing the information I’d come across. This POST ended up as a STICKY in the local forum. Over the last few weeks….I’ve been trying my best to make sure the information listed is correct.

This by no means is a 100% COMPLETE history, and may contain error’s….

So — if you have some info to share….. please PM me, and we’ll polish the turd together. (at this time I have chosen to exclude, RXC/SXC/640 dirt, and SMR race models)

  • Newbie Question SM & DS Set-up

I’ve been shopping for a used Suzuki DRZ which I plan to set-up with DS wheels and an SM set. I’d ride in DS mode probably 60-70% of the time.

Should I get a DRZ-S and look for a set of SM wheels and tires or a DRZ-SM and look for the DS wheels and tires?

What are the differences between the two that I need to consider?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer.

  • ESMRA Updates, Information & Happy Halloween

    Hello ESMRA Members and Family,

Tony and I wanted to check in with everyone and wish all of you a very Happy Halloween. We hope that everyone has a safe and great Halloween weekend.

We wanted to take a few moments and let you know a few of the GREAT things that have happened since the season has ended. We also wanted to stop for a moment and let everyone know that just because we all are not racing and traveling, that ESMRA, Tony and I are here! Tony and I are working diligently; as well as, we are striving to make 2010 better than 2009.

Here are just a few things that are to come in the next few months:

    1) The ESMRA website will be going through another major over haul. We are always striving to make it as user friendly as possible. The site address will not be affected, but some updates might reach you via e-mail and other information avenues before the site is completely updated. We will do our best to make this transition as smooth as possible!

    2) ESMRA will be making all announcements in regards to any rule changes and class structure changes that may occur.

    3) ESMRA will be announcing when the 2010 Membership Pre-Registration will open.

    4) ESMRA will be announcing returning sponsors and new sponsors for 2010.

    5) ESMRA will be announcing any new staff members for 2010.

    6) If and when there are any new facilities added for 2010, we will announce them.

Since the season has ended, Tony has traveled over 1700 miles within three days to visit two different promoters and attend those promoters? events. He included in that trip a visit to another facility in Boston, with the hope that we might be able to add them to the schedule for next year. This weekend, I will be in attendence at Colonial Beach Drag. Also, in November, I will be traveling down south to visit with another facility.

Also, there are many riders that asked Tony and I to try to put something together for the end of February and first of March 2010 down south; and we have already started that process. As soon as we have all information, we will release it! We know that many of you are excited to put those plans into effect. We will do our best to make sure that it is ?sooner? rather than ?later?!

We have already confirmed some race dates for 2010, but we will not announce the 2010 Race Schedule until it is 100% complete. Most of you might remember that some facilities don?t like to schedule their dates until after the holiday season. Therefore, as an announcement to all new ESMRA Members, as well as, a reminder for all returning ESMRA Members: the ESMRA Race Schedule is normally released right after the New Year. However, if we can receive confirmation from all locations prior to the first of the year, we will release it as soon as it is complete.

I, personally, will e-mail the final point standings tomorrow night (Friday, October 30, 2009). I will also post them through all other information avenues ? SMJ, Face Book, MySpace, other blog sites, etc.

In closing and most of all ? ESMRA is here! ESMRA is returning in 2010 stronger, better, bigger ? The ESMRA ?family? is not going anywhere! Tony and I hope you continue to be part of the great ?family? environment that you ALL helped create!

Thanks for your patience as we use the ?off season? to prepare for 2010!

  • Winter racing & practice??

    All,

I’m a frozen Canuck looking for some winter races and practice tracks to ride this winter. Trying to piece together a 1 or 2 week trip down to SoCal area sometime this winter to get a mid winter supermoto fix. Are there any races in the winter down there? What about practice days at the various tracks around SoCal?

Are there any other areas that might have some winter races and practice days? Arizona, Nevada etc?

How about MX races and tracks?

  • A/M clutch perch & Barnett clutch cable

I just bought and installed a barnett clutch cable, but the ball and housing is too big for my fly racing perch and lever.

So I’ve refitted the standard clutch perch and lever and it all fits good, but prefer the feel of the fly one, but ruined the adjuster trying to bore it out.

Anyone on here who’s got a barnett clutch cable, have you found an A/M perch/lever that fits it?

  • Tire Changing & Stuff

Last March, after having 2 sets of tires mounted and balanced for my KTM, I decided to start changing my own tires. I’ve been doing my dirt bikes for 15+ years so why not my SUMO? I had my dad check out the Harbor Freight unit while he was there, they had it and the motorcycle attachment for somewhere around $100. FF 7 months and it’s time for a new back tire so I ordered a Mojo lever and a set of Mojo blocks to go with the HF tire changer. http://home.comcast.net/~prestondrake/mojoweb.htm

The HF unit basically works as a stand and clamp for the rim so youu can go through the normal routine of prying off and spooning on a tire. The base of the unit is designed to change automotive tires and has a bead breaker lever that is very handy for breaking the bead of the tire from the bikes rim. While doing this I use a thin piece of plastic to protect the rim from the metal.

Up top when using the motorcycle attachment the rim is held in place by adjusting 2 blocks and a screw clamp holds the rim tight. These too are metal and would scratch the rim if allowed so, intro the Mojo Blocks. http://www.supermotojunkie.com/newth…=newthread&f=9

After breaking the bead and clamping the rim in place, I followed the instructions for the Mojo Lever to dismount the front tire then remount. The lever worked great!! The lever is as much as the HF unit but worth every penny as it uses Delrin, or something like it, on both ends to protect the rim and is very well designed making the job of mounting and dismounting very easy.

All of this effort on the front was because I went tubeless last March and I was getting a bad vibration up there. http://www.supermotojunkie.com/showthread.php?t=5090 As I suspected the tape had come off and balled up in one spot causing a vibration. Added to the tape I used Dyna Beads http://www.innovativebalancing.com/motorcycle.htm that work inside the tire to keep it balanced. They are little ceramic beads that work using centrifugal force to keep a tire balanced, needless to say the beads were all stuck to the tape making the tire that much more out of balance. Since the tire is holding air perfectly I decided to leave the tape off this time and add the dyna beads. The dyna beads work great and the bike is smooth as glass.

In short the stuff from Mojo and Innovative Balancing are 2 products worth looking into if your a do it your self rider. Going tubeless eliminates the tube and IMO makes the bike feel better as well as dropping some weight. The Harbor Freight unit was a good bargain and I like that I could change a car tire as well, don’t know if I ever will but I can.

That’s it, thought I’d wright up a couple of good products that I’ve had good luck with.

Everyone put on a good show and all the spectators said they’d return for the October race. All of the new racers said they’d return for the October race and bring more racers with them.
Close racing was the special of the day. The Open Class main was a nail biter with 2-3-4 place decided in the last set of whoops. The DRZ race looked to be good if the Main was anything like the Heat except somebody failed to refuel before the race started. Here’s the results-

    L- 60 points
    F- 49 points
    B- 47 points

67 Mini is a new 11 year old racer who was at his first race of any kind. He held his line as instructed and didn’t get spooked when being passed- even when he was split by 2 racers lapping him. He already thinks he needs a bigger bike than the ttr-90. His 17 year old brother had a flat & couldn’t race but plans on being on track next time.

As you can see by the point totals some of the Class Championships are mathematically won. I would like to congratulate the following-
    Open Class Champion- 948 Jon

    MINI Class Champion- 64 Steve

I want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting the series and I hope to see all of you at the next race on October 17th.
